A weekend in which I knew I had forfeited because I had chosen to “call out” the Friday before a holiday in which the Dealership was scheduled to be closed. But because of my circumstances, I felt I had no choice but to forfeit the “holiday pay.” But this was the automotive industry, and anyone who's worked in it can tell you: management will always strive for the largest profit margins while employing the smallest possible workforce. I built a career in the automotive field, which spanned across three decades

And for those thirty years, my identity was wrapped up in serving customers, solving problems, and helping people get back on the road, all while trying to save them a dollar or two. I wasn't a mechanic—I was a Parts Advisor and a dam good one if you ask me, but I'm a bit biased. My job was to listen, diagnose, ask the right questions, and make sure technicians and customers had what they needed to fix the real problem, not just the symptom.

I believed that if you worked hard, treated people with respect, and did the right thing, those things would matter.

On January 2nd, that belief was shaken.

After more than thirty years, I was terminated.

One conversation.

One afternoon.

Just like that, the routine I'd known for decades disappeared.

I drove home wondering the same question millions of Americans have asked after losing a job:

Now what?

What I didn't know then was that losing my job wasn't just the end of a career.

It was the beginning of a calling.

Three days later, I watched the presidential inauguration.

Like every inauguration before it, I paid attention. But this one looked and felt different.

For the first time in decades, I wasn't thinking about getting up for work the next morning.

I had nowhere to be.

No dealership waiting.

No parts orders.

No repair tickets.

Just questions.

Lots of questions.

I started reading.

Then I kept reading.

I read court decisions, government reports, historical documents, investigative journalism, and the Constitution itself. I began comparing what public officials were saying with what I could verify for myself.

The more I learned, the more I noticed something that felt strangely familiar.

Warning lights.

After thirty years around automobiles, you learn something important.

The check engine light isn't the problem.

It's the warning that something deeper is happening beneath the surface.

Ignore it, and you're calling a tow truck

Ignore it even longer, and you're shopping for a new automobile.

And as I watched our politics, our institutions, and our public conversations, I couldn't shake the feeling that America was driving with every warning light illuminated on the dashboard.

Instead of pulling over to investigate, we argue about whether the lights are even real.

That's when the mechanic's mindset I'd spent decades developing suddenly found a new purpose.

It's not fixing cars or deciding what parts to recommend

It’s helping people recognize warning signs.

Some people have asked me why I started Common Ground Media.

The honest answer is that I didn't set out to become a political commentator.

I certainly didn't wake up one morning hoping to spend my days writing newsletters or recording videos.

I reached a point where staying silent was no longer an option.

My wife and I are raising our 30-year-old daughter, who was born with developmental disabilities and requires full-time care. Like millions of American families, we've faced financial setbacks, uncertainty, and difficult choices. Losing my career only added to those challenges.

But difficult times have a way of revealing what matters most.

Recovery taught me something years ago that still guides my life today: you cannot solve a problem until you're willing to admit there is one. I think I’m going stop there for this issue and hope you have a better idea as to why and what Im trying to build here and looking forward in building it together with you, The Ground Crew. See you in the next episode.

Founders Letter

Independence Day-July 4th 2026

Gary Paul

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Common Ground Media.

If you're reading this, you're here at the very beginning, and for that, I'm grateful.

My name is Gary Paul.

For more than thirty years, I worked in and around the automotive industry. My job was to diagnose problems before they became catastrophic. Every day, I learned to trust something most people ignore:

Warning lights.

Warning lights don't exist to scare us.

They don't exist to annoy us.

And they certainly aren't there to be ignored or covered with a piece of duct tape.

They're there for one reason.

To tell us something needs our attention.

That lesson shaped the way I looked at the world long before I ever imagined creating a media company.

After more than three decades in the profession I loved, I lost my job. At the same time, my wife and I continued caring full-time for our 30-year-old daughter, who has developmental disabilities and lives at home with us. Those experiences changed the direction of my life and forced me to ask a difficult question:

If this chapter is over, what is the next one supposed to be?

The answer wasn't obvious at first.

So I started reading.

I studied American history.

I tried to better understand our Constitution, our institutions, and the responsibilities that come with citizenship.

I followed current events more closely and asked myself the same questions I used to ask when diagnosing a vehicle.

What am I looking at?

What does the evidence suggest?

What are the warning lights trying to tell us?

I know reasonable people can look at the same facts and reach different conclusions.

That has always been true in a free society.

Common Ground Media doesn't exist to demand agreement.

It exists because I believe our country benefits when more people understand how government works, ask thoughtful questions, examine evidence carefully, and hold those in positions of power accountable.

My analysis and opinions will sometimes challenge people. I don't expect everyone to agree with every conclusion I reach. But I do hope you'll always understand the standard I'm trying to live by:

Follow the evidence.

Be honest about what is known and what is opinion.

Correct mistakes.

Keep learning.

Treat people with dignity, even during disagreement.

Those principles matter more than any single news cycle.

Through Democracy Junkies, I'll examine the stories shaping our nation.

Through The Breaking News That's Breaking US, I'll explore why those stories matter and how they affect everyday Americans.

Through The Ground Crew Report, I'll go deeper, providing context, history, and analysis that doesn't always fit into a video.

Common Ground Media is my commitment to doing this work with integrity, independence, and respect for the audience.

If this mission speaks to you, I hope you'll walk alongside me.

Read.

Watch.

Ask questions.

Challenge my ideas.

Share the work if you find it valuable.

And above all, stay engaged.

Because democracy isn't something we inherit once.

It's something every generation is asked to strengthen.

Thank you for being here at the beginning.

Welcome to Common Ground Media.

Welcome to The Ground Crew.

Let's get to work.

Gary Paul
Founder, Common Ground Media

Democracy Junkies
The Breaking News That's Breaking US

Where Facts Always Matter.

Issue No. 1 — I Can't Stay Quiet Anymore

I almost didn't write this.

Because who am I, right? I’m nobody special. I’m not a journalist. I don’t have letters after my name or a network behind me. I’m just a guy — a husband, a worker, somebody who spent most of his life keeping his head down and doing his job, same as most of you reading this.

But I can’t keep my head down anymore. And I think if you’re being honest with yourself tonight, a lot of you can’t either.

The Ground Crew Report is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

So this is me, an ordinary citizen, doing the only thing I know how to do about it: telling as many people as I can, while I still can.

WHY I’M WRITING TO YOU

Here’s the thing I keep coming back to.

You don’t need to be an expert to know when something’s wrong. You don’t need a fancy degree to read a dashboard that’s lit up red from one end to the other. Anybody — anybody — can see it once they stop being told not to look.

And I’m seeing it. The warning signs. Not one. Not two. A whole row of them, all flashing at once, and a chorus of voices telling us every single day that it’s nothing, that we’re imagining it, that the smart thing to do is relax and look away.

I’ve reached the point where I can’t look away. And I’ve reached the point where staying quiet about it feels like its own kind of lie.

So I’ll say it plain: I would rather warn you and turn out to be wrong than stay silent and turn out to be right. I can live with being wrong. I don’t think I could live with the other thing.

That’s what this newsletter is. A neighbor knocking on your door. Not to scare you for the sake of it — to make sure you saw it too, so you’re not facing it alone.

THIS ISN’T LEFT VERSUS RIGHT

Let me get this out of the way, because it matters to me more than almost anything.

I’m not here to win an argument for a team. The warning signs I’m talking about don’t care who you voted for, and neither do I. When the house is filling with smoke, you don’t stop to ask your neighbor which way he votes before you bang on his window.

If you still believe the truth is worth something — if you can feel in your gut that something’s gone wrong no matter which channel you watch — then you and I are on the same side of the only line that actually matters right now. You’re welcome here. Bring your doubts. Bring your questions. Just don’t bring the idea that we have to be enemies, because we don’t, and they are counting on us believing that we do.

WHAT I’LL BRING YOU, EVERY WEEK

Here’s what lands in your inbox each issue. Same rhythm every time, so you always know what you’re getting:

🔧 THE DASHBOARD — The warning signs of the week, plain and simple. What actually deserves your attention, with the spin scraped off.

🛠️ UNDER THE HOOD — One story, taken all the way down to what’s really going on underneath — and what it could mean for you and the people you love.

📣 FROM THE GROUND CREW — Your turn. Your questions, your fears, your view from wherever you’re standing in this country. I read every reply, and I mean that.

📋 WHAT WE CAN DO — Because fear with nowhere to go just eats you alive. Every issue ends with something real and doable this week. We don’t do despair here. We do the next step.

THE ONE THING I’M ASKING

A warning only works if it spreads. One person whispering in an empty room changes nothing. So here’s all I’m asking of you:

Subscribe — it’s free, and it always will be. Just so you don’t miss it.

Forward this — to one person. The neighbor, the brother-in-law, the old friend you think might be ready to hear it.

Stay close — the show is coming. Subscribe now and you’ll be first through the door when it drops.

That’s it. I’m not selling you anything. I’m just one citizen who couldn’t stay quiet, hoping to find the others who feel the same.

I don’t know how all this turns out. Nobody does. But I know that the people who saw it coming and said nothing never forgave themselves — and I know I’d rather stand with you now than explain my silence later.

So please. Don’t look away.

— Gary Paul One concerned citizen. Welcome to the Ground Crew — we’re the ones who refused to look away.

The Ground Crew Report is produced by Common Ground Media.
